For example, a 4/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.054, a 6/12 pitch uses 1.118, and an 8/12 pitch uses 1.202. A 1,500 sq ft footprint with an 8/12 pitch gives 1,803 sq ft of actual roof area.

For example, with a 12-foot run and a 6/12 pitch (26.6°), the rafter length = 12 ÷ cos(26.6°) = 13.4 feet, plus your desired overhang (typically 12–24 inches).
